SDLRC: Brooke Clements highlights technical diamond articles for March 2019

Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation
The Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation is compiled by Patricia Sheahan who publishes on a monthly basis a list of new scientific articles related to diamonds as well as media coverage and corporate announcements called the Sheahan Diamond Literature Service that is distributed as a free pdf to a list of followers. Pat has kindly agreed to allow her work to be made available as an online digital resource at Kaiser Research Online so that a broader community interested in diamonds and related geology can benefit. The SDLRC Blog is a guest commentary by an industry expert about articles, themes and trends in recent issues of the SDLRC.

Comments by Brooke Clements

Brooke Clements received a B.Sc in Geology from Indiana University and an M.Sc in Economic Geology from the University of Arizona. From 1982 to 1997, he was an Exploration Geologist and Regional Manager for Exmin Corporation where he conducted diamond exploration programs throughout the United States. From 1998 to 2007 he was Vice President, Exploration for Ashton Mining of Canada Inc. Under his leadership, the Ashton-SOQUEM exploration team discovered the Renard diamond district in Quebec where Stornoway Diamonds opened the Renard Diamond Mine in 2016. From 2007 to 2015 he was President of Peregrine Diamonds Ltd. where he led the team that discovered the Chidliak diamond district on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. Currently, Brooke is President of JBC Ventures Ltd., a consulting company specializing in mineral exploration and community and government relations. He is also President and CEO of Craton Minerals Ltd., a private diamond exploration company focused on discovering North America's next new diamond district.

Brooke Clements has volunteered to highlight the scientific articles that caught his attention in the monthly reference compilations. The opinions expressed are solely his and he can be reached at .

Technical Articles
Gems and Gemology, V. 54 #4: In this issue of Gems and Gemology, which is a free pdf download, there are four features on diamonds: colored diamonds, pink diamonds, diamond inclusions and deep diamonds.
Electrical structure of the lithosphere from Rio de la Plata craton to Parana Basin: amalgamation of cratonic and refertilized lithospheres in SW Gondwanaland Bologna et al., ID Magnetotellurics is used to compare the Rio de la Plata craton in Uruguay with the Paleozoic-Mesozoic Paraná basin in Brazil. Very good paper to get up to speed on South American tectonic settings and lithosphere studies.
Limits to artisanal and small scale mining: evidence from the first kimberlite mines Nel, ID This interesting paper, which is a free download, compares artisanal mining with company mining relying heavily on the Kimberley diamond mine as an example. They draw a fairly obvious conclusion. "The consolidation of mine ownership at the (massive) orebody level was required for reasons other than to create monopolies or cartels. It has also been shown that mechanisms exist that will undermine coordination between artisanal miners working adjacent claims in a massive orebody." An interesting fact: there are currently 40.5 million people worldwide involved in artisanal mining and 7 million involved with "industrial mining".
Upper mantle Earth structure in Africa from full wave ambient noise tomography Emry et al., ID This free download is a good "big picture" look at African tectonics. Seismic data is unevenly distributed throughout Africa with a number of dead zones which hinders continent-scale interpretation. The authors use full waveform tomography constrained by seismic noise to obtain clear images of mantle structure beneath parts of Africa with few seismometers like the Sahara desert and Congo basin.
Type IIb diamonds and their super deep genesis Smith, ID This talk on Type IIb diamonds at the Vancouver kimberlite cluster on February 27 is sure to be interesting and I'll be there. Mr. Smith received his PhD focused on diamond studies at UBC and now has a great job with GIA in New York. He gets to look at and study all kinds of diamonds from throughout the world.
The 2.0-1.88 Ga Paleoproterozoic evolution of the southern Amazonian Craton ( Brazil): an interpretation inferred by lithofaciological, geochemical and geochronological data Roverato et al., ID The Brazilian Amazonian craton hosts some of the best-preserved Paleoproterozoic magmatic and volcanic sequences in the world. The authors present a paleo environmental picture of processes during the Late Paleoproterozoic. They propose that volcanism during this time may have created one of the largest Silicic Large Igneous Provinces in the world.
