SDLRC: Brooke Clements highlights technical diamond articles for October 2018

Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation
The Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation is compiled by Patricia Sheahan who publishes on a monthly basis a list of new scientific articles related to diamonds as well as media coverage and corporate announcements called the Sheahan Diamond Literature Service that is distributed as a free pdf to a list of followers. Pat has kindly agreed to allow her work to be made available as an online digital resource at Kaiser Research Online so that a broader community interested in diamonds and related geology can benefit. The SDLRC Blog is a guest commentary by an industry expert about articles, themes and trends in recent issues of the SDLRC.

Comments by Brooke Clements

Brooke Clements received a B.Sc in Geology from Indiana University and an M.Sc in Economic Geology from the University of Arizona. From 1982 to 1997, he was an Exploration Geologist and Regional Manager for Exmin Corporation where he conducted diamond exploration programs throughout the United States. From 1998 to 2007 he was Vice President, Exploration for Ashton Mining of Canada Inc. Under his leadership, the Ashton-SOQUEM exploration team discovered the Renard diamond district in Quebec where Stornoway Diamonds opened the Renard Diamond Mine in 2016. From 2007 to 2015 he was President of Peregrine Diamonds Ltd. where he led the team that discovered the Chidliak diamond district on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. Currently, Brooke is President of JBC Ventures Ltd., a consulting company specializing in mineral exploration and community and government relations. He is also President and CEO of Craton Minerals Ltd., a private diamond exploration company focused on discovering North America's next new diamond district.

Brooke Clements has volunteered to highlight the scientific articles that caught his attention in the monthly reference compilations. The opinions expressed are solely his and he can be reached at .

Technical Articles
New tephrostratigraphic data from Lake Emakat (northern Tanzania): Implications for the eruptive history of the Oldoinyo Lengai volcanoBalashova et al., ID The active Oldoinyo Lengai volcano in northeastern Tanzania is the only active carbonatite volcano in the world. This study reports stratigraphic findings from ash layers in a lake near the volcano. The Igwisi Hills volcano, located approximately 500 km southwest of Oldoinyo Lengai was described in the past as a kimberlite and is the closest analogy we have to a Quaternary-aged kimberlite.
Geology and resource development of the Kelvin kimberlite pipe, NWT, Canada Bezzola et al., ID This paper presented at the 2017 IKC in Botswana is a good summary of the geology of the Kelvin kimberlite in the NWT. Unprecedented detailed exploration by Kennady Diamonds over several years transformed a .08 ha surface exposure into at least 8.5 million tonnes of potential mill feed for the adjacent Gacho Kué mine. It is a great story of exploration perseverance.
A new appraisal of lithospheric structures of the Cordillera craton boundary region in western Canada Chen et al., ID This tomographic study focuses on the transition from the western Cordillera to the craton in Canada, with emphasis on Alberta and its kimberlites. The complicated interpreted Proterozoic and Archean basement terranes of Alberta received a lot of attention in the 1990s and 2000s, when about 50 kimberlites, some of them significantly diamondiferous were discovered. There are still some unanswered exploration questions in Alberta and I believe more kimberlites, maybe even an economic one or two, will be discovered there.
The changing face of the lithosphere-Asthenosphere boundary: imaging continental scale patterns in upper mantle structure across the contiguous U.S. with Sp converted waves Hopper and Fisher, ID This is an interesting example of a large-scale study of broad tectonic domains moving from west to east across the United States. Sp wave data acquired from Earthscope's Transportable array and other broadband stations is used for the study. The lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary is pretty clear in the western and eastern US, but not in the stable interior of the country where the boundary is thought to be much deeper.
On the origin of large type IIA diamonds Simakov, ID This study presents a model for the formation of rare Type IIA diamonds. The presence of these stones can make a low-grade kimberlite economic or dramatically improve the fortunes of a diamond mine. It's important to determine whether these diamonds are present as early as possible in the evaluation of a kimberlite.
The diversity of tectonic models and thoughts about transitions between them Lenardic, ID This free download is a good summary of various plate tectonic models and there is even speculation on whether there is plate tectonics on other planets.
Kimberlite distribution in Angola and prospective areas for new discoveries Ustinov et al., ID This paper from the 2017 kimberlite conference proceedings is a valuable reference for diamond exploration in Angola.
